One of the most iconic boy bands of the ’90s, the Backstreet Boys are synonymous with that era’s music. Consisting of Nick Carter, AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, and Howie Dorough, the band made their debut in 1996 with their self-titled album, which included hits like “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” and “Get Down (You’re the One for Me).” Their follow-up album, Backstreet’s Back (1997), featured the timeless tracks “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “As Long as You Love Me.”
Their real breakthrough came with the 1999 release of Millennium, which included the mega-hit “I Want It That Way.” This album earned four Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year, solidifying their place in music history.
Despite their success, the Backstreet Boys faced several challenges, including legal battles with their former manager, Lou Pearlman, over fraud—a story set to be detailed in the upcoming Netflix documentary Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam, premiering on July 24. Throughout the years, individual members pursued solo projects and other interests but always reunited to create more music for their fans.
Ahead of the documentary’s release, let’s take a look at what the Backstreet Boys have been up to since their debut.
AJ McLean has continued his career in music and ventured into acting. He released a solo album, Have It All, in 2010. McLean, now 46, has two daughters with his ex-wife Rochelle and is currently on the “A Legendary Night” tour with Joey Fatone of *NSYNC.
Nick Carter, the youngest member, has also pursued a solo career and reality TV. Despite personal losses and ongoing legal battles, Carter remains active in the industry. He and his wife Lauren Kitt Carter have three children.
Kevin Richardson left the band in 2006 but rejoined in 2012. Now 52, he is married with two sons and continues to perform with the group.
Howie Dorough released two solo albums and married Leigh, the band’s former webmaster. They have two sons together.
Brian Littrell, who also launched a solo career in Christian music, lives a quiet life with his wife Leighanne and their singer son Baylee in Atlanta.
As they prepare for their documentary’s release, the Backstreet Boys continue to prove their lasting influence in the music world.
