Style DNA gets a generative AI chatbot that suggests outfit ideas based on your color type

Style DNA, an AI-powered fashion stylist app, creates a personalized style profile from a single selfie. The app is particularly useful for people interested in seasonal color analysis, a process used to determine the best colors to complement an individual’s skin tone. This service can be expensive, with experts charging upwards of $300. However, the use of AI has the potential to significantly reduce the cost.

By analyzing your complexion and facial features, Style DNA can determine your seasonal color type (such as Light Summer or Dark Autumn) and recommend suitable clothing styles.

Additionally, the app offers features such as personalized shopping recommendations and wardrobe management. It can suggest outfits based on your height and body type, as well as items in your existing wardrobe, which you can scan with your phone camera and upload to the platform. The app can even help prevent impulse purchases while shopping by allowing you to take photos of clothing and give advice.

“[Style DNA] generates personalized recommendations based on an individual’s appearance rather than predicting what users will purchase based on their previous shopping history. So we elevate that personalization with real-time and will normalize data by a simple selfie,” co-founder Elena Volkova told TechCrunch.

The app recently integrated generative AI into its product, launching a new chatbot assistant that acts as your personal stylist. You can ask specific questions about what to wear to different events or, for example, what colors work best with green cargo pants.

Style DNA suggests clothing from its marketplace of over 150 retailers–H&M, Zara, Old Navy, Urban Outfitters, and more– and pairs it with items you already own to create a custom outfit that caters to your personal appearance and preferences.

As explained by Volkova, the approach is similar to RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation), which involves combining Large Language Models (LLMs) with traditional databases. In this instance, Style DNA is trained using information such as current fashion trends, expertise from professional image consultants, and a dataset of millions of images to help the AI comprehend fabrics and understand how different patterns and cuts look on various body types. Style DNA utilizes ChatGPT 4.0 as its LLM.

The company has other plans in the pipeline, including the release of a male version of the app and a new feature that recommends outfits based on the user’s location and the current weather conditions.

Since its launch in 2022, Style DNA has amassed 3.2 million downloads, over 300,000 active users, and 70,000 paying subscribers. The company previously secured €3.4 million in pre-seed funding from Black River Ventures, and has a crowdfunding campaign underway.

You can download the app on the App Store and Google Play Store
