  • This is the eighth hat-trick in Men’s T20 World Cup history.

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins achieved a remarkable feat on Sunday by becoming the first player to secure back-to-back hat-tricks in T20I history. During the Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, Cummins accomplished this feat against Afghanistan.

In the same match, Cummins could have achieved a 4-in-4 (four wickets in four consecutive deliveries) if David Warner hadn’t dropped a catch off Nangeyalia Kharote.

Afghanistan batted first and posted 148-6 in their allotted 20 overs, with openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60 off 49) and Ibrahim Zadran (51 off 48) contributing significantly. Notably, they became the first-ever pair to achieve three century stands in a T20I series, putting up 118 runs for the first wicket.

Cummins, leading the charge for Australia, secured another hat-trick during the backend of the innings. He dismissed Rashid Khan, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib to claim the feat. Rashid fell on the last ball of the 18th over, while Janat and Naib were dismissed on the first two deliveries of the final over.

In addition to this match, Cummins had also taken a hat-trick in Australia’s previous game against Bangladesh. His impressive performance makes him part of an exclusive group of bowlers who have achieved hat-tricks in Men’s T20 World Cup matches. The ICC confirmed that this is only the eighth time a bowler has achieved a hat-trick in this prestigious tournament.

Cummins reflected on his achievement during the innings break, saying, “I remembered that one. It’s crazy that I have played 100-odd games for Australia and now I have got two (hat-tricks) in a row.” His consistency and skill have certainly left a mark in T20 cricket history.
