Following India’s triumphant win in the T20 World Cup against South Africa, Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, has decided to retire from T20 internationals. He made this announcement at a press conference, echoing Virat Kohli’s earlier declaration during the post-match ceremony.

“This was my last [T20I] game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup.

“I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line.”

Rohit concludes his T20I journey as the top run-scorer in the format, with 4231 runs from 159 matches, and he also holds the record for the most centuries (five) in T20 internationals. His T20 World Cup victories include the first in 2007 as a player and the latest in 2024 as the team’s captain.

The retirement of Rohit and Kohli from T20Is had been anticipated. Post India’s semi-final exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup, both players took a hiatus from T20Is, returning only in January of this year, focusing on the 2024 T20 World Cup.

During his tenure as captain, Rohit led in 62 matches, scoring 1905 runs with a strike rate of 149.76 and an average of 34.01, securing 49 victories out of those games.
