Bloody Maria – A Beautiful Mess
A Bloody Maria is a classic Bloody Mary made with tequila. It’s also known as a Tequila Bloody Mary. This Bloody Maria is made using tequila, tomato juice, lemon juice, prepared horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt and black pepper. Garnishes are half the fun, so go big!

Ingredients in a Bloody Maria
- Tequila – Choose a blanco tequila or reposado tequila.
- Tomato Juice – There’s no need for Bloody Mary mix when you start from scratch using tomato juice.
- Lemon Juice – Or lime juice.
- Prepared Horseradish – (Not horseradish sauce)
- Worcestershire Sauce – A savory sauce often used in grilling and in Bloody Mary’s.
- Hot Sauce – Such as Tabasco sauce, Cholula or Tapatio.
- Celery Salt
- Ground Black Pepper
- Garnish – Bloody Marias are all about the garnish. You can mix and match ideas. A few of our favorites include celery stalks, tomatoes, pickle spears, green olives, lime wedge, jalapeño slices, cocktail onions or fresh rosemary or cilantro.
The best glassware to serve a Bloody Maria in is any type of tall drinking glass such as a collins glass or a pint glass. I used these wooden garnish picks to create a fun tomato garnish.
Instructions
In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine tequila, tomato juice, lemon juice, prepared horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt and black pepper.
Shake for 10-15 seconds until well chilled.
Strain and pour into a cocktail glass with fresh ice.
Garnish with celery, olives, bacon, or whatever your heart desires!
Tips for Making
- Orange Juice – Some recipes swear by adding a splash of orange juice to your recipe. I haven’t tried this yet, but it sounds interesting for a bit of sweet and savory flavor.
- Salted Rim – Add a salted rim if you want to be a little extra. Try our Margarita Salt recipe if you haven’t yet.
- Optional Ingredients – If you want to add a little zing to your cocktail, add a squeeze of lime juice. If you want to enhance the savory flavor, add a dash of garlic powder to your cocktail shaker.
