Ons Jabeur opts out of 2024 Paris Olympics

  • Ons Jabeur withdrew from 2024 Paris Olympics.
  • The decision came after potential knee injury.
  • She will be competing in Wimbledon from July 1.

Tennis sensation Ons Jabeur has opted out of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Her decision stems from potential injury concerns associated with playing on clay courts, which are also used for the French Open.

Jabeur, after her quarterfinal stint on the French Open’s clay, is transitioning to grass courts and will participate in the US Open on hard courts following the Olympics.

Post-consultation with her medical advisors, Jabeur concluded that swiftly switching court surfaces post-French Open could potentially lead to a knee injury.

“After consulting my medical team regarding attending the Olympics in Paris, we have decided that the quick change of surface and the body’s adaptation required would put my knee at risk and jeopardise the rest of my season,” Jabeur stated on social media.

“I have always loved representing my country in any competition. However, I must listen to my body,” she continued.

Athletes face challenges with rapid surface changes due to varying court characteristics, such as clay’s bounce and friction, grass’s low bounce and speed, and hard courts’ balanced bounce and pace, all demanding different physical adaptations.

Jabeur, Tunisia’s top tennis player and the first Arab woman to clinch a WTA Tour title at the 2021 Birmingham Classic, is prioritizing her health over the Olympics to ensure her longevity in the sport. She is set to compete at Wimbledon on July 1.
